Brand New Colony

Remember that "bowling" picture I posted last week? That was just the tip of the iceberg. Just the tip. You see, I have a thing for neon lights. I have hundreds if not thousands of neon pictures, and anyone that has ever travelled with me has no doubt been annoyed while I stop to snap a dozen photos of the same sign. I don't know why I like them so much. Maybe because they evoke a bygone era. Maybe I'm just a simpleton that likes shiny glowy things.

This is one of the most spectacular neon signs I have ever seen. It's in Miami's South Beach, on Ocean Blvd. I think. I walked down there by myself one night, after an incredible rainstorm that left the streets flooded. Overall my trip to Miami was not that great, an account of the heat and humidity and the fact that the mosquitos tried to destroy me.

Wanna hear something wacky? This building is actually purple. Shows up as blue in all the photos. What's up with that? Furthermore, back in the '80s when the Utah Jazz had purple uniforms they always looked blue on tv. Someone explain this to me.

  1. I don't know about anyone else, but I like blue better than purple, so I'd say it's an improvement. I would say that the reason the purple looks blue has to do with wavelengths. I have no way of explaining how, but definitely wavelengths.

  2. Yeah, I like the blue too.

I think you're right about wavelengths. I'm sure they explained this when I was in film school, but I wasn't paying attention because I was too busy thinking about my Sundance award acceptance speech.

  3. I love Ocean Drive at South Beach. It's one of my most fave places on the planet.

You don't actually want to stay there at The Colony, or in any of the other Ocean Drive hotels, because the yobbos (that's Australian for "drunken louts") outside make too much noise, but it's great to visit.

(I prefer staying at Loews, or, when someone else is paying, The Bentley.)

As for the "purple" thing, it's a mystery to me. My pics all came out blue too.

  4. Yobbos! I like that.

My first night in South Beach I was one of those Yobbos.

I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, because I used to be fancy like that.

  5. just to make sure you get it right, it's pronounced "yob owes", as is yob sounds like job, and owes it what happens when you borrow money. yobbos.

it occurred to me that the hispanic influence in america might mean you might think it's yobboss, which it isn't.

  6. Basketball won't must be firmly rule managed play while on an indoor timber court. You can use many distinct variations for the game that will bring basketball to your whole brand-new level. Variety is just about the things that creates basketball a real popular game. www.scorespro.com
